Matagarup Zip+Climb: Harnessed for adventure, rooted in heritage

January 17, 2025

“We didn’t just launch a business—we introduced Perth to an experience that’s as exhilarating as it is deeply cultural,” says Ryan Mossny, co-founder of Matagarup Zip+Climb. As a symbol of resilience born amid the pandemic’s most restrictive days, Matagarup Zip+Climb has carved out a space in Perth’s tourism scene, blending thrill with heritage on the iconic Matagarup Bridge. With breathtaking climbs, heart-stopping ziplines, and an underlying mission to honour the rich stories of the Whadjuk Noongar people, Matagarup Zip+Climb is not just about tourism; it is about connection and innovation.

Climate resilience directly contributes to the stability of tourism destinations. By implementing measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change, destinations can protect their natural resources, which are often the primary attractions for tourists. For instance, destinations like Puerto Rico and the Philippines have developed sophisticated resilience strategies that include climate risk assessments, biodiversity conservation plans, and hazard mapping.1,2 These measures help preserve beaches, forests, and other natural assets that are crucial for tourism.

The adventure behind the Matagarup experience

In 2020, amid an uncertain global climate, Mossny and his team were awarded the Main Roads Western Australia tender, with the dream to transform the Matagarup Bridge from a local landmark into an adventure destination. “We wanted to create something that didn’t just thrill but also honoured the spirit of the place,” Mossny shares, explaining how every tour incorporates Indigenous history to celebrate the Whadjuk Noongar heritage.

Matagarup Zip+Climb offers two flagship experiences: the bridge climb, which provides panoramic views of Perth, and an adrenaline-charged zipline that swoops over the Swan River to the Burswood Peninsula. Their latest addition, a family-friendly mini golf course, further opens the experience to a diverse audience. “We’re focused on accessibility for all ages,” Mossny notes, highlighting the blend of high-energy activities and more relaxed family options.

Launching a tourism business in 2020 was not easy, as Mossny explains: “We had to pivot from a model geared toward international and interstate tourists to one tailored exclusively for locals.” With Western Australia’s borders shut, Matagarup Zip+Climb had to reshape its offerings for a domestic market largely unfamiliar with local tourism. This adaptability, however, laid the groundwork for their success, establishing a loyal base of Perth residents eager for new, homegrown experiences.

The pandemic affected not only their marketing but also operations and staffing, delaying the arrival of experts needed for safety and logistics. But Mossny and his team turned obstacles into learning experiences. “The time allowed us to refine our safety protocols and deepen the cultural narratives embedded in our tours. In hindsight, these delays were instrumental in shaping what Matagarup Zip+Climb is today,” he reflects.

Merging adventure and cultural education

A climb or zipline at Matagarup is a journey through local history. Every experience weaves Indigenous stories into the adventure, bringing the significance of Matagarup, “the place of knee-deep water,” to life. Collaborating with Justin Martin from Djurandi Dreaming, an Indigenous artist and cultural guide, Matagarup Zip+Climb enriches each tour with insights that make guests feel deeply connected to the land.

Their dedication to cultural education has been key to differentiating themselves from other adventure tourism ventures. In 2021, Matagarup Zip+Climb received the Western Australian Tourism Award for New Product Development, a testament to their success in merging adventure with authentic storytelling.

Challenges, tech, and growth

Beyond pandemic setbacks, Matagarup Zip+Climb has faced operational challenges. “Safety is non-negotiable,” says Mossny, detailing the stringent protocols and specialised training every staff member undergoes. Operationally, the team relies on tech to simplify bookings, streamline processes, and reduce errors. Their booking system integrates with distribution partners, ensuring that local and international visitors can reserve experiences with ease.

Social media, particularly Instagram and Facebook, has been another game-changer for Matagarup. By showcasing user-generated content and offering guests complimentary photos through their Fotaflo partnership, they have created a steady flow of organic online visibility. “Our guests are our best marketers,” says Mossny, adding that each shared photo acts as an authentic recommendation for future visitors.

In addition to customer engagement, Matagarup Zip+Climb uses LinkedIn to connect on a business-to-business (B2B) level. “LinkedIn allows us to network with industry partners, tourism agencies, and other stakeholders, share business achievements, and discuss industry insights.”

More than a thrilling experience, Matagarup Zip+Climb is a model of sustainable tourism. “Our focus on cultural preservation resonates with the modern traveller who values meaningful experiences,” explains Mossny. While the activities have minimal environmental impact, the company has made cultural sustainability a priority, incorporating Indigenous narratives to offer an experience that respects and preserves the Whadjuk Noongar legacy.

Through strong partnerships with local tourism organisations like Tourism Western Australia and Destination Perth, Matagarup Zip+Climb has gained visibility in the broader tourism market. By collaborating on marketing initiatives and leveraging their networks, Mossny successfully attracted both local and international visitors. “Our close relationship with the Burswood Peninsula precinct, including venues like Optus Stadium, has enabled cross-promotions with nearby attractions, offering visitors a comprehensive experience. These collaborations drive traffic between attractions, enhance our brand, and contribute to the sustainable growth of Perth’s tourism ecosystem, benefiting all partners involved,” shares Mossny.

In the coming years, Mossny and his team plan to expand their offerings, envisioning a tourism hub on the Burswood Peninsula. Their upcoming Virtual Reality product will make the climb and zipline accessible to those unable to participate physically, further enhancing inclusivity. “We are committed to growth that respects both people and place,” states Mossny, illustrating a vision for adventure that stays rooted in cultural responsibility.

For businesses like Matagarup Zip+Climb, the support of the global travel industry is invaluable. “Lowering commission fees on booking platforms and creating accessible marketing channels would go a long way,” says Mossny. He advocates for collaboration with larger entities that can amplify small operators’ reach. Training in digital marketing and sustainable practices, as well as streamlined visa processes for tourists, could further help local operators thrive in a competitive market.

Advice from the zipline

To other SMEs, Mossny offers practical advice: “Stay flexible, unique, and customer-focused.” For Matagarup Zip+Climb, adaptation was the difference between struggle and survival. “Embrace your story and use it to stand out. Build connections with your customers, the industry, and the community. Strong relationships are your greatest asset.”

He also emphasises the importance of sustainability, urging small businesses to align their operations with ethical practices that resonate with conscious travellers. “A sustainable approach not only attracts visitors but ensures longevity in an evolving industry.”

Matagarup Zip+Climb is a celebration of resilience, culture, and community. With a strong foundation in adventure and cultural integrity, they are setting a high standard for sustainable tourism. Mossny and his team have transformed Perth’s Matagarup Bridge into a beacon of adventure and respect for Indigenous heritage, demonstrating that the path to business success is one paved with authenticity, adaptability, and respect for the past.

As Mossny puts it, “In tourism, what you offer must be more than an experience; it has to connect. Matagarup Zip+Climb does just that, showing that true adventure isn’t just in the thrill but in understanding where you stand.”
